The Basic Moves in Snowboarding

Knowing these basic moves will allow a beginner to become a pro in due time. We learned how to skate and balance on the edge of the snowboard, which is an important step in snowboarding.

Next is the first descent.  Make sure to go to a gentle slope and an area of low traffic.  Shift your weight onto the front foot and then place the rear foot on the stomp pad.  Hold your head up and look where you are heading. Slide down the hill and continue until the snowboard naturally slows.  Slowing naturally may not be possible because some slopes do not have a long run out.  Just be careful to not collide with anyone.  Continue to do this until you're comfortable with balancing down a slope.

Unfortunately most slopes do not end in a nice gradual run off for riders to slow down on their own, so stopping is something that must be learned before hitting the slopes.  Beginner snowboarders should take the time required to master the skill of stopping. Since it is not as easy as putting on the break in a car, the technique behind it can be frustrating at first.  Stopping can be done on the toe edge or on the heel edge.  Toe edge stopping is performed by pushing with your rear foot and twisting with your front foot. This will cause you to turn either left or right depending what stance you are.  Once you master toe edge stopping it is time to do heel edge stopping.  It is the same idea, but will move the opposite direction.

Lastly, traversing is yet another important skill that should be mastered before leaving the beginner hill.  This is what is needed to navigate around the slopes and is good to know in case someone unsuspecting falls in front of you.  First try the toe edge of your board and whenever you reach the end of the trail reposition yourself and try to move the opposite direction on the heel edge.

Remember like any kind of sport whether it be soccer, hockey, or just bike riding it will take time to master these skills and be able to use them in combination with each other. Just keep practicing and it will eventually come natural.  Before you know it, you will be racing your friends down the slopes.
